Today’s word: Worship
My story:
Merriam-Webster defines worship as “to regard with great or extravagant respect, honor, or devotion
We tend to think of worship as a time set aside to think about God. Perhaps it is quiet meditation. It may be a song or a raised hand. All of these things are true, of course, but today I realized that worship is much more.
I’m working on my next book. I’m using the entire weekend to be sort of a recluse and just write. My family has plans out of town, so I didn’t feel bad about indulging my addiction. I woke up with words in my head and went immediately to work, trying to set them free.
After several (and by several, I mean about nine), hours later, I realized that I had neglected my daily prayer and meditation time. I never do that. That is my one stable habit that keeps me grounded and sane.
But almost immediately, I got the answer to my guilt. My writing is my worship. That sounded egotistical. Let me explain.
God created me. I am a work of God’s creativity. I was fashioned with specific abilities that only I can do. My writing is my gift, my bliss. It is the thing I was made to do. When I am creating, I am most like my Creator.
Let’s look at that definition again. “to regard with great or extravagant respect, honor, or devotion
What better way to respect and honor my Creator than to use the gift I’ve been given. When I am writing, I am connected to the Source of all creativity. I am pulled along by the force of my purpose. I am making God smile.
Takeaway: What is the one wonderful thing that you are good at? What is the thing that lights you up? Stop apologizing for your gift. It is the best part of you. It’s the thing God loves to see you do. It is more than a quirk or a hobby, and it is not a waste of time. It is worship.
Today’s goal: Today I will spend some time with what makes me, me. I will worship God by demonstrating the wonder of my creation. I will do what I was made to do.
Affirmation to go: I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. Psalms 9:1
